Love at every age

It’s Senior Citizens Day!

Romance isn’t a young person’s game—it’s a human one. Love doesn’t check your birth certificate before it knocks you sideways.

And yet, too often in romance fiction, the spotlight sticks to twenty- and thirty-somethings, as if desire has an expiration date. The truth? Love and intimacy can be more compelling later in life. There’s a richness to the stakes, a deeper knowing of self, and a tenderness that comes from having weathered a few storms.

Older main characters bring their full histories to the page—careers, losses, kids, grandkids, complicated families—and all of that informs the love story. Even secondary older-couple arcs can steal the show. (Holland, My Heart readers know Naomi Gallagher has a full, gorgeous happily-ever-after of her own coming.)

Even though it’s still a work-in-progress, I’ve got this sweet snippet from the epilogue of Ximena, My Heart. It’s planting seeds for Naomi’s own HEA:

Holland grins. “Now if we could just find Naomi a life partner…”
“She says she’s married to the work,” Ximena deadpans.
“Which is wild,” Holland adds, “because I’ve seen her flirt with that one grant reviewer.”
They laugh. Not because the grief is gone—but because the joy is real.

Here are three romances featuring older characters that deserve a spot in your earbuds:

The Switch by Beth O’Leary, narrated by Alison Steadman and Daisy Edgar-Jones. I haven’t read this one yet, but the premise—grandmother and granddaughter swap lives for two months—has my full attention. The grandmother’s romance arc promises charm, warmth, and proof that love can catch you by surprise at any age.

Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes — Narrated by Julia Whelan and Linda Holmes. I adored this one. While the main romance is between younger characters, some of the most heartwarming, quietly romantic moments come from the older generation. It’s gentle, wise, and hopeful—exactly the kind of story you want on a late summer afternoon.

Role Playing by Cathy Yardley — Narrated by Chris Brinkley and Elyse Dinh. This one surprised me in the best way—fun, witty, and full of chemistry between two fortysomethings who meet through online gaming. It’s grumpy/sunshine perfection with enough emotional depth to make you root hard for their happily-ever-after.

Whether it’s a silver fox learning to date again, a grandmother finding love on her own terms, or a seasoned hero with laugh lines and a wicked sense of humor, older love stories give us a fuller, more textured view of romance—and remind us it’s never too late for a happy ending.

Who’s your favorite silver-haired romantic hero or heroine?
